Fantoni for Humanitas University Campus
The new complex for the international faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Nursing and Physiotherapy at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Pieve Emanuele (Milan) is designed by Filippo Taidelli from FTA architectural studio. Three buildings for a total of 25,000 sq. metres accommodate 1,200 students from 31 different countries, as well as lecturers and researchers. Fantoni was entrusted with the acoustics.

The Campus buildings are arranged around a lawned square, set within a large park. The warm tones and essential architecture of the three main blocks (a multifunctional building including a canteen, a library and services; the teaching block with lecture rooms, offices and the Simulation Centre; the research laboratories) facilitate the functional aspects and blur the boundaries between the teaching and research blocks and the multifunctional hub.
The focus and objective of the project, not only from an architectural point of view, is the contamination between disciplines: hence the need to ascribe a key role to informal spaces that will facilitate sharing of experiences and interpersonal relations, free from linguistic or professional barriers.
This project required a partner with the competence to ensure the necessary environmental wellbeing and acoustic comfort, fundamental aspects to encourage communication. Fantoni was selected to provide acoustic treatment in heavily frequented communal spaces, from meeting rooms to conference halls, lecture rooms, corridors and hybrid spaces.
4,000 sq. metres of coverings with fully-customized textures and decorations, involving complex processes such as 1,2-mm milling were used to realize this project.
The product selected for this mission is the 4akustik, the best-performing wood-based sound-absorbent system on the market today, formulated to achieve absolute excellence in terms of both health and safety. 4akustik complies with the “F4 star” standard, certified by the Japanese authorities and considered to be the most exacting in the world, with reference to its extremely low formaldehyde content and consequent environmental protection. Hence this product is extremely eco-friendly, suitable notably for use in public spaces where the client seeks high technical performance combined with sustainability, in addition to aesthetic considerations.
4akustik is also the only wood-based sound-absorbent panel to achieve a B-s1,d0 fire rating (EC classification).
