The First Architecture and Urbanism Biennale in Seoul Faces Tomorrow’s Urban Challenges
The first Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in Seoul, “Imminent Commons”, will take place from 1 September to 5 November 2017.
The works presented will deal with themes relating to the urban issues caused by the environmental, economic and social crises of our generation, but also to the technological transformations that will shape tomorrow’s world cities.
“The principles of modern urbanism—the mass integration of production, employment, and consumption; the separation of work, dwelling, leisure, and transportation; the division between the natural and the artificial— are no longer effective at addressing the urgent questions of today’s cities. The traditional urban elements of buildings, streets, and neighborhoods must be reassessed within the emerging human and non-human urban constituencies,” explain co-directors of the biennale, Hyungmin Pai and Alejandro Zara-Polo.
The biennial will be organized around two main exhibitions hosted at the Donuimun Museum and the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and will be complemented by a program of events such as workshops, guided tours, conferences, etc.
The exhibition at the Donuimun Museum will showcase the work of 40 teams of architects, planners and designers from 24 different countries, and the iconic Dongdaemun Design Plaza building will host the “Cities Exhibition” dedicated to citizen initiatives aimed at preserving and developing common spaces.
