Defending Vernacular Architecture

The Ukrainian architecture studio balbek bureau was founded by Slava Balbek and Borys Dorogov en 2018 and is based in Kyiv. Since the beginning of the war, the team have been working on its social initiatives programme, RE:Ukraine.


In 2022, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion, the Kyiv-based architectural office balbek bureau initiated the Re:Ukraine programme, a series of humanitarian and social projects aimed at facilitating the country’s recovery.

Among these initiatives is ‘Re:Ukraine Villages’, a platform which allows users to design their house online, in accordance with the main features of Ukrainian rural architecture. The platform then provides all the necessary information, including plans, recommendations, and recommended materials, to facilitate the construction.
