Venice Art Biennale 2017: VIVA ARTE VIVA !
The 57th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition will be officially opened to the public on May 13th, 2017.
Entitled VIVA ARTE VIVA, the 2017 edition is organized by Christine Macel, the second French curator of the Venice Biennale of Art. Her only French predecessor, Jean Clair, curated the exhibition in 1995.
Christine Macel dedicated her professional life to art; curator-in-chief of the National Museum of Modern Art since 2000, she has made a name for herself by creating the department “Création contemporaine et prospective” and by inaugurating the Espace 315 at the Georges Pompidou Center.
This year, the theme of the exhibition is articulated around the notion of humanism. Christine Macel announces it as follows:
“Today, faced with a world full of conflicts and shocks, art bears witness to the most precious part of what makes us human, at a time when humanism is precisely jeopardized. Art is the ultimate ground for reflection, individual expression, freedom, and for fundamental questions. The role, the voice and the responsibility of the artist are more crucial than ever, within the framework of contemporary debates.”
The exhibition will host a total of 120 artists from 51 different countries, 103 of them are participating for the first time.
