Video: lectures at the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation

In September 2024 and throughout the autumn term, the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), directed by the architect Andrés Jaque (OFFPOLINN), offered a series of lectures on engagement and the different ways in which construction and architecture can participate in change. Architects, urban planners, artists, ethnographers, historians, politicians and activists from all over the world were invited to take the floor in debates and conversations open to the public. Three of these have been posted on the GSAPP Youtube channel, below.

Conversation between Mariam Issoufou and Mario Gooden

Mariam Issoufou founded her architecture and research practice, Mariam Issoufou Architects in 2014 in Niger. The agency carries out public, cultural, residential, commercial and urban design projects. Her most notable projects include the Hikma community complex, a library and a mosque in Niger.

In June 2023, AA featured a portrait of the architect in its ‘Afriques’ issue, available from the online shop.

Conference-debate by Marina Tabassum, with Mireia Luzáraga (TAKK)

Bangladeshi architect and educator Marina Tabassum founded Marina Tabassum Architects in Dhaka in 2005. Marina Tabassum always works according to an ecological criterion, combining the climate, context, culture and history of her projects. In her projects, Marina Tabassum seeks to establish a contemporary architectural language that is also rooted in place. For example, her Bait Ur Rouf mosque project in Bangladesh is not only a place of worship, but also a refuge for a dense neighbourhood on the outskirts of Dhaka. It won the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2024.

Conference-debate by Minsuk Cho (MASS Studies) with Jean Im and Wonne Ickx

Minsuk Cho founded the Mass Studies architectural practice in Seoul in 2003. Mass Studies is interested in the discourse of architecture through urban and socio-cultural research. In addition to his architectural practice, he was co-curator of the Gwangju Design Biennale in 2011 and co-curator of the Korean pavilion at the 14th Venice Biennale.
