Continuous ceramics
For the 41st edition of Cersaie, the international trade fair for ceramics and bathroom furnishings, which takes place in Bologna from September 23 to 27 2024, L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui is featuring a series of articles focusing on the use of ceramic materials in architecture and related innovations. Come to Rome to discover the third project in this series.
Located in the Esposizione Universale di Roma (EUR) district, in the south of Roma this residential building is part of a demolition then reconstruction operation. It’s architectural practice, founded in 2016 by Alessandro Cambi, Francesco Marinelli and Paolo Mezzalama and based in Rome, Geneva and Paris, seized the opportunity to build a seven-storey building with 12 flats (3-rooms, 4-rooms dwellings and penthouse), and used materials such as ceramics and travertine, to create continuity between interior and exterior spaces.
Every flat has an outdoor space, whether it’s a balcony or loggia on the upper floors, or a planted garden in the ground-floor. By using the same Alabastrino travertine tiles in both the living rooms and outdoor areas, the architects have achieved a continuity of flooring that allows the integration of the balconies and loggias into the living rooms.
On the façade, the architects used ceramic panels developed by Ceramica Continua, with no visible joints, to be installed on concrete or aluminium structures. Although the colour is dark, it has a reflective effect, allowing the building to blend into the urban fabric of the EUR district.
