The experimentations of London Architecture Festival
The London Festival of Architecture has been attracting more and more visitors to the British capital ever since 2004. The 2018 edition explores the theme of “identity” through more than 400 events, such as debates, conferences, installations and film screenings, open to the public from June 1st to 30th. Find here the not-to-miss events selected by AA.
The “Treehouse” installation designed by Studio Kyson will be installed on the site of the iconic London Battersea Power Station. The intervention takes the form of a pavilion made of smoked mirrors and charred wood – an ancient Japanese wood protection technique called Shou Sugi Ban. The pavilion will be visible throughout the festival.
The Dulwich Picture Gallery presents, in partnership with the London Architecture Festival, the pre-selected projects for the construction of a new reception area in its historic garden. A new venue that will accompany the temporary pavilion, delivered for the 2017 London Festival of Architecture by Londonner office IF_DO (above). The selected projects can be seen from June 5th to 22th.
Near Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Scott Withby Studio, who collaborated with the engineering office Arup, has set a trapezoidal arch placed above St. Paul Street, under which pedestrians coming out of the subway can pass. The structure suspends hundreds of anodized aluminum poles, of various lengths and colors, that reflect the facade of the cathedral.
The iconic Robin Hood Gardens housing project is currently being demolished as part of a neighborhood regeneration project. The screening of an Urban-Think Tank film on the demolition project, The Disappearance of Robin Hood, will take place on June 28th at 7pm.
