The AA design selection

Architecture, plastic arts, science and also design! The AA design selection is a new appointment dedicated to the designers and companies who, every day, design and develop new solutions for our interiors. Here is a selection of new ingenious and poetic objects which, each in their own way, forge the history of contemporary design...

CELEBRATION, THE TWERGI COLLECTION BY ETTORE SOTTSASS AT ALESSI.
From May 2021 to April 2022, the “factory of Italian design”, Alessi, is celebrating its 100th anniversary and is reissuing a series of objects from its historic collection in turned wood, Twergi, designed by the great Ettore Sottsass. Created in 1989 to revitalise the ancient tradition of woodturning typical of the Strona Valley in the Piedmont region, where Alessi is based, this collection is an emblem of the company’s close relationship with its environment. Still today “at the crossroads between a mass production industry and a furniture factory“, as Alberto Alessi explains, the company reaffirms its preference for an “industrial handcrafted” production process that gives the objects the cultural and qualitative aura characteristic of the Alessi catalogue.

PROUST MADELEINE, WONDER BY EMILIE CATHELINEAU AT CVL LUMINAIRES.
Reminiscent of the pocket lamps of our childhood, the design of Émilie Cathelineau’s XL brass lamps is a little nostalgic. We particularly like its simple shapes, this association of volumes with round geometries, which give it all its elegance and freshness. Dark blue, light blue, dark red, vintage green, mango or guava; copper, nickel, brass or graphite; as wall lights or lamps, the variations are almost infinite!

HAVEN OF PEACE, ILA 2023 BY PATRICK JOUIN AT PEDRALI.
After Ila 2020, 2021 and 2022, Patrick Jouin presents Ila 2023, an armchair made up of a tubular structure in tinted steel, four legs with a diameter of 30 mm, and a solid polyurethane shell filled with a flexible polyurethane foam. Its supple and graceful silhouette invites to relax and expresses all the generosity of its comfort, an armchair that invites to extract from the noise and agitation for a moment of relaxation. According to Patrick Jouin, “It is a space, a micro-space, almost a sensual micro-architecture, where one comes to curl up. Practically a refuge” – that says it all.

A CHILD’S PLAY, LADY GALALA BY PELUFFO & PARTNERS AT MARTINELLI LUCE.
Imagined, dreamt and thought up in a tent in the mountainous desert of Sokhna in Egypt, the Lady Galala lamp – which takes its name from the nearby Mount Galala – is inspired by the shades of the desert, the sun, the sky, the sand and the sea. This do-it-yourself lamp is built around a matt white aluminium structure and up to three conical diffusers of different diameters, available in four colours: yellow, orange, blue or white. Mixing colours and swapping cones is child’s play.

DOUBLE JEU, THE ALLIÉ STOOL BY LUCA NICHETTO AT LA MANUFACTURE.
A dual-purpose object, Allié is both a stool and an occasional table which, at just a few centimetres high, exudes great strength of character. The base and the top, entirely moulded in polyurethane foam, are connected by two metal handles that allow the object to be moved easily. The silhouette of a person with hands on hips, or a small totem pole, can be seen. The contrast between the matt finish of the main body and the metallic shine of its handles, combined with the bold and elegant colour palette, makes this object even more captivating, almost fascinating.

ALL IN LIGHTNESS, INVERTED GRAVITY COLLECTION BY MATHIEU LEHANNEUR.
I dreamt of a world without gravity, like a floating state of matter where the notions of heavy and light would no longer have any meaning“. Inspired by stories about life on the International Space Station, the Inverted Gravity Collection includes a cabinet, table, coffee table, console, bedside table and bench, as if floating in weightlessness. Made of a block of marble or onyx, each element of the collection rests on bubbles of blown glass. But make no mistake, these bubbles can support up to 250 kg, “their apparent delicacy is only an illusion“.

IMPLACABLE LOGIC, LOUNGE CHAIR BY MAX LAMB AT VAARNII
Mathematical in its approach and transparent in its construction.” The Lounge Chair is the result of a meticulous study of pine, from cultivation to sawmill to sale. Max Lamb’s approach was then rational: he chose commercially available sections of wood and assembled them to create a large surface and a logical shape. The material is taken from blocks of wood to create two large convex recesses. The first impression of hardness is replaced by visual softness and comfort.
