The House, Revolutions of a Model
Who can still dare to build detached houses? If the trend, in France, is to criticise this typology, it’s because architects are often not involved in its conception. Even in Belgium, Europe’s laboratory for domestic architecture, the ‘4-facade house’ has lost ground, giving way instead to intergenerational housing and cohabitation projects; the enthusiastic reception these developments receive is matched only by their obvious design quality. Meanwhile, Christophe Millet, President of the Conseil national de l’Ordre des architectes (France’s professional architecture organisation), argues in favour of a precise and delicate architecture, involving both the investment of available urban land and the renovation of existing buildings – in his words, ‘the project of the century’. The house is dead, long live the house? This is where the architect comes in.
