Towards an architecture more inclusive of handicap
La Maison de l’Architecture et de la ville Nord-Pas de Calais, based in Lille, opened two years ago its exhibition “When architecture erases handicap” (“Quand l’architecture efface le handicap”), about the ways “architecture can help to rise above the handicap” without adding another layer of stigma. Today, this exhibition is again open to the public, at the Maison de l’Architecture de Poitou-Charentes, based in Poitiers.
About twenty French and international constructions will be shown as examples of architecture which include the handicap within a global project conception, not as a last minute addition in order to follow accessibility regulations.
On May 30th at 7 p.m. a conference will be organized with Nadia Sahmi, an architect with an expertise in accessibility issues. Her experience working on the 2005 accessibility law, and years of knowledge have made her question the efficiency of this law, and offer a new vision of “living together”.
